What is an apostille?

Documents that work internationally.

An apostille is an authentication certificate that makes a US-issued document legally valid in any country that is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. Apostilles are required for international use of birth certificates, marriage certificates, powers of attorney, FBI background checks, diplomas, and many other document types.

Need an FBI background check apostilled?

We handle both services. One vendor for the complete process. Perfect for international adoptions, foreign employment, and visa applications.

Country requirements

Hague Convention countries.

Apostilles are valid only for Hague Convention countries. As of 2024, most countries (including China and Canada) are Hague members. A few common non-Hague countries (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Egypt) require a different authentication process called embassy legalization. Contact us to verify your destination country's requirements before booking.

Frequently asked

Apostille questions.

How long does the process take?
Standard Alabama state apostilles take 7 to 10 business days from when we receive your document. Rush service is available same-day if we walk the document to Montgomery. Federal apostilles through the US Department of State take 6 to 12 weeks standard, or 24 to 48 hours with our expedited courier service.
What if my document is from another state?
Documents must be apostilled in the state where they were issued. If your document is from another state, you'll need to use that state's Secretary of State. We can refer you to apostille services in other states.
Do I need a translation?
Translation requirements vary by destination country. Some countries require certified translations of the apostilled document. We can refer you to certified translators in Birmingham. Contact us about your specific country's requirements.
What's the difference between state and federal apostille?
State apostilles authenticate state-issued documents (notarized affidavits, Alabama vital records, Alabama court documents). Federal apostilles authenticate federal-issued documents (FBI checks, federal court documents, IRS letters). They go through different government offices.
Can I get a rush apostille?
Yes, for Alabama state apostilles, we offer same-day rush service by personally walking your document to the Secretary of State office in Montgomery. For federal apostilles, we partner with DC-based courier services for expedited processing.
What if my country isn't a Hague member?
For non-Hague countries (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, etc.), your document needs authentication plus embassy legalization at that country's US embassy or consulate. We can handle the US side. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
